Mosaics Workshop

Broken to beautiful

Join us for a two-part mosaic art workshop where you'll learn the full mosaic process from start to finish — cutting, designing, gluing, and grouting — while creating a piece with real staying power. Together, we'll bring to life a 6"x10" wooden board featuring an owl, a figure central to the story of the animals that rise from the ashes.

This series is a chance to slow down, work with your hands, and discover the mosaic philosophy that there are no mistakes — only new ways to transform broken pieces into something whole and beautiful. No prior art experience needed, just a willingness to cut, place, and see what emerges.

Who is the program for:

PCRC offers free creative arts programs for anyone impacted by the January 2025 Palisades wildfires. This workshop is designed for teens and adults.

Dates: Saturday, October 10 & Saturday, October 17
Time: 12:00pm – 4:00pm (both sessions)

Session 1, (Oct 10): Cutting, Design & Gluing — learn mosaic fundamentals including cutting, designing and gluing glass pieces onto the owl image of the wooden board.
Session 2 (Oct 17): Gluing & Grouting — finish the cutting and gluing and then grouting to bring the owl to life.

Please note: Attendees are expected to attend both sessions in order to complete the full piece. This is a sequential, two-part series rather than two stand alone drop-in classes.

About the Facilitator:

Kate Samuels has been drawn to mosaic art for many years, captivated by its endless creative possibility and the belief that "there are no mistakes" — only opportunities to transform broken pieces into beauty. A former resident of the Pali Bowl, Kate lost her home and art studio in the 2025 LA fires. She is a retired teacher who has found her passion in teaching her passion.
